'80s-era hot hatches have been sold at increasingly larger values over the last few years. However, none have reached the lofty heights set by E378 TKN. The car sold for £590,500 just a few weeks ago, with the auction results becoming a hot topic all over social media.

The car originally had a predicted sale value of £150,000- £180,000, hoping to break the original Sierra Cosworth's record at £132,750. However, there were at least 2 people that were determined to get this time capsule of a 1980s rocket that inflated the price to over half a million.

E378 TKN was bought 14 years ago by a car fanatic with an attention to detail that would shame Singer. The ex-owner sourced rare, original fuel filters and oil, and bought replacement period-correct RS500 rims and tyres to preserve the originals. John Mayhead of Hagerty UK said:

“This diligent approach is typical of our vendor and will explain why this gleaming black RS500 may well be the best you have ever seen.”

This is because Generation X (1965 - 1980) are now at their peak earning potential, and so performance cars of the '80s and '90s prices are beginning to skyrocket. People who grew up lusting for these cars now have a large enough disposable income to afford them.

However, this price is unlikely to repeat. Often, prices are inflated in the heat of an auction and do not represent the true value of a car.
