A year after announcing their return to endurance racing, after leaving the discipline in the early '70s, Ferrari have released photos of their 2023 Hypercar competitor, the Ferrari 499P.
It is powered by the same 3.0L twin-turbo as used in the 296 GT3, uprated to produce 660BHP, all of which is sent to the rear wheels, with a 268BHP electric motor producing drive for the front wheels, although as per new regulations can only be driven at speeds above 90MPH, in order to prevent leaving their RWD opponents behind in the slow stuff.
Obviously, Ferrari have gone for a bespoke carbon fibre monocoque, in order to keep the weight down, and for rigidity, with nearly all other parts the lightweight woven black material too. The marque haven't released major details about the design of the car yet, presumably to keep a shroud of secrecy of their new motorsport venture.
This new car will drive in either the LMH or Le-Mans Hypercar, which are replacing the outgoing LMP1 class that we have seen over the last few years. The new class looks extraordinarily exciting, and I'll most definitely be getting into enduros' next year, with new classes and regulations hopefully meaning closer competition and more exciting viewership than the Toyota dominance over the last few years. So far, these new regulations have enticed these big hitters for 2023 or '24: Acura, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Glickenhaus, Isotta Fraschini, Peugeot (definitely the best looking so far!), Porsche, Toyota (who've been dominant in WEC for the last few years since Porsche left), and Vanwall.
Will you be watching next year? We certainly will be!
