With the current UK living expense going up, not all of us can afford expensive cars for Sunday thrills. Even today however, there are cheap cars to be found that will bring a smile to your face on a British B-Road.
Ford Puma
The Ford Puma Coupe ran production from 1997 to 2001 however the name was reused on a new small crossover this year by Ford. The original had options of a 1.7L 16v VCT, as well as an 89bhp 1.4 and 102bhp 1.6L 16v, however the 1.7 was the most popular, hence why most Puma Coupes come with this today. I found this Puma with some, shall we say interesting, decals.
Mazda MX5 (any generation)
The Mazda MX5 is a small Japanese roadster that has been in production since the mid ’90s. It is an incredibly popular sports car with the Mk1 being considered as one of the great small sports cars, holdings its own against the likes of sports car specialists Lotus. I found this tidy Mk2 for £1295 with just two owners from when it left the the factory back in 2003.
Toyota MR2 Mk3
The Toyota MR2 Mk3 was a rival for the MX5 back in the late ’90s and early 2000s. It felt more track focused thanks to a 1.8L engined placed behind the driver and thanks to just 975kg of mass, it was a match for some cars with double its 138BHP. Compared to other cars on this list, it is more expensive with it slowly becoming a classic, however I still found a tidy 2001 MR2 with 62,000 miles for a whisker under 2K. If you are a wannabee racing driver looking for a racing car that won’t break the bank, there are also active series all over the world racing the MR2.
